About ArchiCrypt Live Mobile

ArchiCrypt Live Mobile basically is a viewer for ArchiCrypt Live volumes. The viewer can open a single volume at a time. You can use ArchiCrypt Live to change contents of the volume if the volume is stored on a rewritable storage medium.

If you want to create new volumes or use advanced features like changing access to existing volumes, using the PKI feature to transfer volumes, or converting entire partitions please purchase ArchiCrypt Live.

ArchiCrypt Live Mobile may be freely distributed without charge.

ArchiCrypt Live Mobile is ideal to transfer ArchiCrypt Live volumes to users who don’t have an ArchiCrypt Live license or to transfer volumes between several computers.

What are ArchiCrypt Live Volumes?

ArchiCrypt stores your sensitive data in so called "volumes". The term "ArchiCrypt Live volume" stands for any type of file or partition that is used by ArchiCrypt to store encrypted, secret files. ArchiCrypt Live offers several types of volumes to support a wide range of advanced encryption formats. You can choose to store data in single files or encrypt entire partitions.

The process of encrypting (e.g. when you save a secret file in your ArchiCrypt Live drive) or decrypting a file (e.g. when you open a secret file) happens in real-time ("on-the-fly").

ArchiCrypt Live Volumes can hold all kinds of data, pictures, mp3 files, office documents or any other files you use. You can even install applications in an ArchiCrypt Volume and run it from there!

A key is used to safely protect access to a volume. The key can be either a password a keyfile or stored on an ArchiCrypt Card.

The opened volume works just like a real disk. You can navigate through the files stored in the volume as you would on any other drive. You can simply open files, copy, delete or move them.

Who can use ArchiCrypt Live Mobile?

You need to use Windows 2000, Windows 2003 or Windows XP or Windows Vista to use ArchiCrypt Live Mobile.

If ArchiCrypt Live Mobile is installed permanently all users on the machine will be able to open ArchiCrypt Live volumes regardless of their user privileges on that machine. If ArchiCrypt Live Mobile is not installed permanently only users with administrator privileges will be able to open the volume.

Transporting Secret Data Using a Mobile Data Safe

It's very simple and safe to transport data using a mobile data safe. All you need to do is to convert an existing volume to mobile data safe.

Then you can take that mobile data safe with you on a disk, USB stick or any other media and access the volume even on PCs that don't have ArchiCrypt Live installed.

You can also attach mobile data safes to an email and send it to other people who can then access the volume with a key you give to them (e.g. a guest key).

All you, or the recipient of your data, need to do to access your data on the target machine is to double-click on the mobile data safe.

You will then be asked to decide whether you want to install ArchiCrypt Live Mobile (the application that will let you access the volume) permanently for all users.

See below for more details on installing ArchiCrypt Live Mobile permanently.

Installing ArchiCrypt Live Mobile permanently

There are two ways to install ArchiCrypt Live Mobile permanently on your computer.

One is to double-click on an existing mobile data safe. A window will appear asking whether you want to install ArchiCrypt Live Mobile permanently for all users.

You can click on "Yes" if you want to install ArchiCrypt Live Mobile. Then all users on the machine will be able to open ArchiCrypt Live volumes regardless of their user privileges on that machine (of course only when they have the correct key for the volumes).

If you click "No" ArchiCrypt Live Mobile will not be installed. In that case you will need administrator privileges on the machine you want to open the volume on.

The second way to install ArchiCrypt Live Mobile permanently is by directly starting the program ACLiveMobile.exe. To do this go to the location of the file and double-clicking on the exe file. ACLiveMobile.exe can be found in the program directory of your ArchiCrypt Live installation (usually C:\Program Files\ACLive5\) or, if you just downloaded ArchiCrypt Live Mobile separately, in your download folder.

You will need administrator rights under Windows 2000, XP and 2003 to install ArchiCrypt Live Mobile!

After the installation you will find "ArchiCrypt Live Mobile Encryption" under Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. That way you can remove ArchiCrypt Live Mobile again at a later time.

Using ArchiCrypt Live Mobile with CD/DVD

Creating an Autorun CD/DVD

You can create autorun CDs or DVDs to automatically open (a) volume(s) when the CD or DVD is inserted.

Autorun is a feature that can be implemented when the CD is burned. Note that the Autorun feature can be disabled on each individual system, in which case an Autorun-enabled CD will not automatically launch.

You can of course also use any other removable storage medium and make it autorun.

1. Create a volume

You have two options if you want to create an autorun CD or DVD to transport your volume(s).

One is to create a standard ArchiCrypt Live container and place it on the storage medium together with the software file ACLiveMobile.exe. Please not that ArchiCrypt Live Mobile needs about 3 MB of disk space.

Image: Hint Alternatively you can create a mobile data safe which already contains the data and the ArchiCrypt Live Mobile application to load the data. If you decide to use a mobile data safe on your autorun CD/DVD simply replace the "ACLiveMobile.exe" with the name of your mobile data safe in the example below.

2. Create a file named Autorun.inf

Open a text editor (e.g. the standard Windows text editor).

Save the blank file as autorun.inf. (Make sure you really use the extension .inf!)

Copy the lines below to your autorun.inf.

[autorun]

OPEN=

LABEL=Live Mobile

ICON=ACLiveMobile.exe

After the OPEN= command you can write:

ACLiveMobile.exe

If you want to start ArchiCrypt Live Mobile when the CD or DVD is inserted. This makes sense when you store several Live volumes on your storage medium and you want the user to select one volume to open.

ACLiveMobile.exe /s

If you want to display only the drive letter selection and password dialog when the CD or DVD is inserted. This makes sense when you store only one volume on your storage medium and you want the user to select the drive letter under which the volume should be mounted. See also /nw switch below.

ACLiveMobile.exe /ts

If you want to display only the password dialog when the CD or DVD is inserted. This makes sense when you store only one volume on your storage medium and you want Windows to select the drive letter automatically. See also /nw switch below.

Image: Hint The switches /s and /ts only work correctly, when ArchiCrypt Live is installed permanently or Windows 2000, 2003, XP or Vista is used and the user has administrator rights.

If you want the drive the volume will be mounted as to display a certain label you can enter that name after the LABEL= command.

If you want to assign a custom icon to your storage medium you can do so with the ICON= command. Simply save your custom icon as .ico file and enter its name after the ICON= command. (ICON=yourcustomicon.ico)

Now save the file again as autorun.inf.

3. Burning all files to CD/DVD

Now you can save all necessary files to your CD or DVD.

• ACLiveMobile.exe (or the mobile data safe)

• ArchiCrypt Live container with your sensitive data

(not applicable if you used a mobile data safe)

• autorun.inf

• icon file (optional)

Considerations on The Size of The ArchiCrypt Live Volume

The maximum size of the ArchiCrypt Live volume(s) you can save on the storage medium depends on the type of the storage medium you want to use.

If you want to save volumes > 2 GB to a DVD the DVDs need to be created in UDF format.

Image: HintInformation for users of Windows Vista: In Windows Vista you can not open volumes from DVDs created in UDF format! If you use Windows Vista you are limited to creating volumes with a size of max. 2 GB and store them on an ISO format DVD. Alternatively you can choose to store your volume(s) on an other removable medium.

USB sticks are usually formatted with the FAT 32 file system. This file system supports a maximum file size of 4 GB. Therefore a volume on FAT 32 can be 4 GB in size at the most. If you want to store a volume on a medium using NTFS file system your volume can be 256 GB in size.

Generally an ArchiCrypt Live volume (NOT the storage medium it is saved to!) that is to be opened from a read only medium (e.g. CD/DVD) can not be formatted with the NTFS file system.

ArchiCrypt Live creates volumes in FAT16/FAT32 depending on their size.

Using Mobile Data Safe Command Line Switches

Mobile data safes support several command line switches that you can apply to modify how the mobile data safe will be opened. You can use those switches from the command line, in a batch file or in an autorun file (autorun.inf).

The common command line syntax is described below:

[volume] /[switch1] /[switchN]

Volume Name of the mobile data safe
Switch Switches are used to define a specific type of operation, set read-only mode, assign drive letter etc.
/i User will be asked if ArchiCrypt Live Mobile should be installed permanently on the system.
/r Volume will be opened in read-only mode.
/f Volume will be mounted as local drive. If this switch is not set the volume will be mounted as removable drive.
/d Assign a drive letter to the volume that is mounted. Syntax: /d=Y
/k Specify the path to a text file that contains the key to the volume. Syntax: /k="C:\Live\Keys\MobileKey.txt"
The text file referred to is not the keyfile! It is only a simple text file that contains the password for a volume in plain text.

When to use this switch:
Assume you shuttle data between several computers. The data is not at risk at those computers. However the transport of data between the computers can be a risk.
Then you can save the key to the mobile data safe used for taking the data from one machine to the other in a text file. That way you will need to enter the password each time you open the volume. Just make sure to use the same path and file name for the password text file on each machine.
/v Name of the volume you want ArchiCrypt Live Mobile to open. You can omit the path if the volume is stored in the same directory as ACLiveMobile.exe.
This switch makes sense only when used with ArchiCrypt Live Mobile and the volume stored separately, not with mobile data safes.
The name of the volume must be specified as follows: /v="somevolume.acl". Quotation marks must be included in he command!
Example: ACLiveMobile.exe /v="I:\Live Volumes\somevolume.acl"
/nw If a volume is opened that is supposably stored on a removable medium (e.g. CD or DVD) the user is warned not to remove the medium before ArchiCrypt Mobile is shut down.
If you want to disable that message you can use the /nw switch.
